Keep Your Pets Safe!
If you're new to the area or new to being a pet parent here are a few tips to help keep your dog safe.
1. During hot weather limit the time your dog is out is in direct sunlight and also the amount of exercise that they get in the heat. Breeds with short snouts, such as bulldogs, have a harder time regulating their temperature than other breeds so they are much less heat tolerant.
2. While a dog's pads offer a lot more protection than the skin on our feet, there are limits. Be careful not to walk your dog on very hot asphalt on hot and sunny days. Puppy's pads are especially sensitive to the heat.
3. Learn which foods that we eat are poisonous to animals and keep them pets. Some foods that dogs should not neat include chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins and avocados. More comprehensive information can easily be found on line at reputable sites like that of the ASPCA.
4. Many common plants ranging from hibiscus to many types of lilies to Norfolk Island pines are poisonous to dogs. You can download a PDF of plants that are toxic to animals at the website of the Humane Society of the United States at humanesociety.org.
